How long to train horse for hunter ring?

Betty asked:

How much training would a young horse, let’s say 5-6 year old need to start in hunters? Can an intermediate adult rider handle such training?

Of course, it’s going to depend on your time to train more than anything else. Remember it takes a horse about a year to rebuild muscle and tendon to do a new job, so if your horse hasn’t been doing much, give her time to get fit. If she’s already fit, then two short lessons a day work better than one long one, also horses are latent learners, and time off helps them learn!

    Good luck!

a lot. i am currently training my 6 yr old gelding to be a junior hunter, and we have been doing the 2′6″-2′9″ for almost a year and he has been ridden 5-6 x per week. it requires a LOT of training to get the horse to be fancy and ready for teh show ring at the big A or AA shows, but you can start out by taking them to C or B shows and trying their experience there. it takes a really long time and a lot of patience, but with the help of a trainer i’m sure you could take it on. just don’t expect it to all happne in the blink of an eye!

This really depends on the horse, trainer and situation.

I think an intermediate rider could train a hunter, especially if under the supervision of a coach or trainer. How long it would take depends on what level of showing you wanted to do, how green the horse is, and how much time you have.
