What is the best type of horse for a mounted shooting competition?

go Yankees asked:

I have ridden horses many times before and I was just wondering what, if any, is a good type of horse for that type of competition.

A well-trained, calm horse is of course necessary for mounted shooting. Most of the horses on the Mounted Shooters of America website look like barrel racers, which means they should be fast and able to turn on a dime too.

newsmsa.com shows photos of Quarter horses, Paints, and Appys. However I would think the breed of horse isn’t as important as having a level-headed mount.

I have been on a mounted shooting team and its a lot of fun. It does not matter the breed of horse but rather the attitude and the smoothness of the gaints. Quarter horses are the favorite because of their calm attitude. You want a horse that you can get a lot with. The worst thing that can happen is when you disagree with your horsduringng a show. You need a horse with a calm disposition and the willingness to learn as well as a calm smooth gaint (trot, canter ect..).
